Poperinge Beer and Hops Festival

The Bier and Hoppefeesten at Poperinge, Belgium, was one of the best little beer festivals I've been to. All from bottles, the beer served here was full of big Belgian flavours, high percentage and fast flowing. But here's the difference between Flemish and Kiwi drinkers: this festival was FUN.

There was delicious food (which people seemed to actually be eating), fantastic music (the crazy dudes in the Radio Fresnel van), and no undercurrent of violent alcoholic unease. This was a family friendly festival, held in one of the town spares but, again, the kids didn't seem to add a strange dynamic either. In fact, all the people working behind the bar were scouts and girl guides!
Being Belgium, there was a diverse and unique range of Belgium beers, which I enjoyed trying.
Another difference from New Zealand or English festivals: people were dancing! In broad daylight! Without being totally wrecked! I have found my people!

The internationally renowned festival is in its 22nd year, and is the very deserving winner of the title 'Belgium's cosiest beer festival'. With 25 brewers, over 100 beers and free entry, this two day festival is a must on any beer geek's bucket list.
